Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between a mini-facelift and a full facelift?
The main difference between a mini-facelift and a full facelift lies in the extent of the procedure and the areas of the face that are targeted:
1. Mini-Facelift:
- Scope: Targets the lower third of the face, specifically focusing on areas like the cheeks, jawline, and neck. It addresses mild to moderate sagging or loose skin.
- Procedure: Involves smaller incisions (often around the ears) and may use less invasive techniques to lift and tighten the skin.
- Recovery: Typically quicker recovery time with less swelling and bruising compared to a full facelift. Results may not be as dramatic or long-lasting.
- Ideal Candidates: Suitable for individuals who are starting to see signs of aging but don't need a major overhaul. It's often chosen by people in their 40s or 50s.
2. Full Facelift:
- Scope: A more comprehensive procedure that targets the entire face, including the forehead, cheeks, jawline, and neck. It addresses more significant sagging, deeper wrinkles, and excess skin.
- Procedure: Involves longer incisions (typically starting near the temples, running around the ears, and extending into the hairline or behind the ears) and more extensive lifting and tightening of skin and underlying muscles.
- Recovery: Generally requires a longer recovery period, with more swelling and bruising. The results tend to be more dramatic and longer-lasting.
- Ideal Candidates: Best for individuals with more advanced signs of aging, typically those in their 50s and beyond, or those seeking a more substantial rejuvenation.
In summary, a mini-facelift offers a more subtle result with a quicker recovery time, while a full facelift provides more dramatic, long-lasting changes with a more extended recovery period.
Who is a good candidate for a mini-facelift ?
A mini-facelift is typically suitable for individuals who are looking to address early signs of aging but don't need the more extensive results of a full facelift. A good candidate for a mini-facelift generally meets the following criteria:
- Mild to Moderate Sagging: People who have slight to moderate skin laxity, particularly around the jawline, neck, and mid-face, are ideal candidates. It's designed for those with less severe skin sagging than what would require a full facelift.
- Good Overall Health: Like any surgery, a mini-facelift is best performed on individuals in good health, with no serious medical conditions that might complicate the procedure or recovery.
- Realistic Expectations: It’s important for candidates to have realistic expectations. A mini-facelift can rejuvenate the face and give a more youthful appearance, but it won’t stop aging or completely reverse the aging process.
- Age Range: Typically, mini-facelifts are recommended for individuals between 40-50 years old, as they usually experience the beginning stages of sagging and wrinkles. However, people outside this range may still be candidates depending on their specific concerns.
- Non-Smokers: Smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications, so non-smokers are preferred for the procedure.
- Targeting Specific Areas: A mini-facelift is ideal for individuals who are primarily concerned with the lower face and neck area—those looking to lift sagging jowls or tighten the skin around the jawline and neck.
If you're considering a mini-facelift, it's essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can assess your individual needs and provide personalized recommendations.
What is an Optimum Mobility Facelift (OMF)?
An Optimum Mobility Facelift (OMF) is a term that's often used to describe a type of facial surgery or treatment aimed at rejuvenating the face while considering the natural mobility and functionality of the skin and muscles. This approach takes into account not only aesthetic improvement but also the importance of maintaining natural facial expressions and movement.
While the term can vary slightly depending on the practitioner, in general, an OMF focuses on:
- Restoring natural contours: The surgery or treatment will lift sagging skin, reposition tissues, and tighten muscles in a way that preserves the natural range of facial movements (smiling, talking, etc.), without over-tightening the skin.
- Preserving facial expression: Unlike some older facelifts that might leave the face looking stiff or "pulled," the goal of an OMF is to enhance your appearance without compromising your ability to express yourself.
- Long-term results: The focus is on achieving a lasting, natural-looking effect that doesn't result in a frozen or artificial look, ensuring the skin remains functional and not overly stretched.
Dr. Zakhary performs full facelifts with Optimum Mobility techniques aiming to combine cosmetic improvements with functional considerations, ensuring patients can maintain facial mobility as they age.
What is a facelift combo ?
A "facelift combo," when including a full facelift, typically refers to a combination of a full facelift surgery along with additional cosmetic procedures to enhance the overall facial rejuvenation process. This multi-procedure approach can address a range of aesthetic concerns and improve both the appearance and the texture of the skin.
A facelift combo might include:
- Full Facelift Surgery (Rhytidectomy): The full facelift itself focuses on lifting and tightening the skin of the face and neck to reduce sagging, wrinkles, and loose skin. It often addresses the lower face (jawline, cheeks, and neck) and can restore a more youthful contour. The procedure may involve repositioning or removing excess skin, tightening underlying muscles, and smoothing out deep lines and folds.
- Neck Lift: This is often included with a full facelift to address sagging skin, fat, and muscle laxity in the neck area. It helps refine the jawline and remove a "double chin."
- Fat Grafting or Fat Transfer: Fat can be taken from one part of the body (like the abdomen or thighs) and injected into areas of the face that have lost volume, such as the cheeks, under the eyes, or around the mouth. This creates a fuller, more youthful appearance.
- Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): Eyelid surgery is often paired with a facelift combo to improve the appearance of drooping eyelids, puffiness, or bags under the eyes. This enhances the overall look of the face and complements the rejuvenating effects of the facelift.
- Botox and Dermal Fillers: Botox is often used in combination with facelift surgery to relax muscles and smooth out wrinkles around the forehead, crow's feet, and frown lines. Dermal fillers (like hyaluronic acid) can be used to restore volume to areas like the cheeks or nasolabial folds, which may complement the lifting effect of the facelift.
- Laser Skin Resurfacing: Laser treatments, like fractional CO2 lasers or other skin resurfacing procedures, may be done after the facelift to improve skin texture, reduce sun damage, age spots, and fine lines, and boost the overall skin tone.
- Chemical Peels: A chemical peel can be used to exfoliate the skin, reducing pigmentation irregularities, fine lines, and improving overall skin texture and tone, further enhancing the rejuvenated look post-facelift.
The Benefits of a Facelift Combo:
- Comprehensive rejuvenation: A facelift combo allows you to address both structural and surface-level aging signs.
- Natural, balanced results: When done together, the procedures can complement each other, creating a harmonious, refreshed look that looks more natural.
- Reduced recovery time: Since multiple procedures are done in one go, the overall recovery time may be shorter than if each procedure were performed separately.
This combination approach is tailored to each individual’s needs, depending on their concerns, the extent of aging, and desired results. It can provide a more dramatic and long-lasting transformation than a facelift alone.
Other services
In addition of performing mini-facelifts and full facelifts, Dr. Kristina Zakhary offers a wide variety of facial cosmetic procedures, among which:
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty nose reshaping surgery can have a dramatic effect on an individual’s appearance. Nasal surgery can reduce the size, reshape or augment the size of a person’s nose, to create pleasant facial harmony and boost self esteem. Dr. Zakhary also has extensive experience in reconstructive rhinoplasty to correct a broken or crooked nose. Since nasal development is not fully complete until around 16-18 years old, younger patients may be advised to wait until at least 18 years old before having a Rhinoplasty surgery, although patients are welcome for a rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Zakhary at any age.

Otoplasty
If you are considering ear pinning surgery (Otoplasty) or earlobe repair, it is very important to choose the right surgeon. The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery highly recommends that you choose a surgeon is specialty trained and certified in Facial Plastic Surgery. You can rest assured that Dr. Zakhary is expertly trained in Head and Neck Surgery and is American Board Certified in Facial Plastic Surgery, and she specializes exclusively in cosmetic surgery of the Face, Ears and Neck

Chin augmentation
A weak chin has an immense effect on your other facial features.
Your nose looks larger and your lower lip seems droopy.
A receding chin also affects your facial expression by conveying a “weak” look.
This is sensed rather than seen !
To correct it, a small incision is made beneath the chin. A synthetic implant, like a sponge, is then introduced inside the chin to enlarge it.
Infection of the implant is possible but uncommon. Some numbness of the lips may be experienced for a few days to a few weeks after surgery.

Medical grade skin care
The Obagi Skin Medical Care System is a medical skin care line that can transform your skin at the level of the baby skin cells, to actually make your skin younger and healthier. The medical skin care creams are excellent, but the individualized treatment and follow up that you receive at Dr. Zakhary’s office in Calgary is even better, since the treatment is targeted for your specific skin type and desired results. Careful and regular follow up appointments with Dr. Zakhary will ensure a comfortable experience as your old skin cells are replaced by new, younger and healthier skin cells.
The Obagi Nu-Derm System speeds up your cells process of making new skin cells and shedding the old cells, to improve the skin’s overall texture and colour. Since it is a medical skin care line, you need a doctor to prescribe and teach you about it.

Botox
Wrinkle reduction agents are medicines that are meant to relax your muscle motion by 50% or more. By relaxing these muscles, the medicine helps to improve frown lines, crow’s feet wrinkles, and horizontal forehead wrinkles, by making these lines less deep and less noticeable. You will look refreshed and relaxed, and you will still have your natural facial expressions, if applied properly in the right doses.
Fillers
Restylane or Perlane gel is expertly and gently introduced by Dr. Kristina Zakhary just under the skin’s surface to improve your face’s natural youthful contours and shape.
It is placed in the right amount until good correction has been achieved. The treated area is then massaged gently to smooth the surface.
